Flood situation is getting worse

The flood situation in several districts continued to worsen on Tuesday due to incessant rainfall over the last couple of days as well as onrush of water from the upstream.

In Kurigram, thousands of people have been marooned for the last 9-10 days as the water level in major rivers like the Brahmaputra, Teesta and Dharla have been flowing above or close to their danger levels due to the heavy rains.

According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials, the Dharla was flowing 20 cm above the red mark while the Teesta and Brahmaputra were flowing close to the danger levels.

Officials at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said about Aman crops on some 56,000 hectares of fields have been inundated, posing a great threat to the rice output of the district.

In Moulvibazar, flashflood caused by onrush of water from Tripura, India has led to the swelling of the Juri River and its branches, inundating about 15 villages in Juri upazila.

About 10,000 people in those villages have been marooned by the floodwater while the water level continued to rise, according to reports reaching the UNB news desk till 7pm on Tuesday.

In Sunamganj, the Surma River was flowing 58 cm above the danger level while about 135mm and 275mm rainfall were recorded at Sunamganj and Jadukata points respectively over the last 24 hours till Saturday.

The incessant rainfall since Sunday last has flooded low-lying areas in Sadar, Doarabazar, Bishambharpur, Tahirpur and Jagannathpur upazilas.

About 10,000 hectares of paddy fields have already been inundated, according to the DAE.

In Bhola, the Tetulia River was flowing above the danger level at several points, inundating some 40 villages.

In Sylhet, most of the low-lying areas of the city have gone under water while the road network across the district has collapsed due to flooding in Jaintapur and Goainghat upazilas.
