Followers of AL MP , JSD leader clash 20 injured, car of MP ransacked in Uzirpur

Followers of AL-lawmaker Nurul Islam Moni and JSD-Upazila Chairman Abul Kalam Azad Badal engaged in clash for  hours-long chasing and counter chasing on Tuesday afternoon at Uzirpur upazila complex following a dispute over project approval and invitation in a function. At least 20 people including journalists were injured, car of the MP was ransacked and Dr. Riazul Islam Sumon, son of the MP opened fire from his revolver on public during the incident.
Agitated people cordoned the MP and his son inside the upazila parishad for long time and police rescuing them sent out of the upazila at evening.
Witnesses said JSD leader upazila chairman Badal while attending  a meeting of upazila coordination and law and order review committee at Uzirpur upazila complex at about 1:00 pm,  lawmaker Moni also attending there.
UZ chairman Badal said he placed two development project proposals in the meeting and MP Moni without any reason opposed that.
Besides MP Moni as chief guest inaugurating upazila Agricultural Fair in morning barred UZ chairman from attending and presiding over the function, Badal alleged.
While   Badal asked upazila agriculture officer that why he was asked not to attend the Agriculture Fair opening programme, the AO said that it was the wish of the lawmaker.
Then the upazila chairman and law maker engaged in hot altercations and son of the MP entering inside the meeting room engaged in scuffle with UZ chairman.
Hearing the report of attacks on UZ chairman, hundred of local people rushed to the spot and tried to assault the MP and his son.
Then the MP’s son opening fire from his revolver took shelter inside the upazila complex and later managed to flee from the cordon by an ambulance at about 5:00 pm.
AL activist followers of the lawmaker and followers of the upazila chairman engaged in clash, chasing and counter chasing till evening.
The situation now under control. Police patrol deployed and till this report no case was lodged, said Anwar Hossain, officer in charge Uzirpur police station.
Police rescuing the AL lawmaker sent outside the upazila boundary, said district police superintendent AKM Ehsanullah after visiting the spot and acknowledging the fire of three blank shots from the revolver of the MP’s son.
AL-lawmaker was not available for comment, but his son claimed  he fired blank shots from his licensed revolver to save him and his father from the hands of mad mobs.(Source: Barisal Correspondent)
