Garment factories to open from Monday

President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Atiqul Islam on Sunday urged the garment workers to join their works to protect the country’s RMG sector.“Garment factories will remain open from tomorrow (Monday)… the factories must remain operational in the greater interest of the nation and the country’s economy. I request all the garment workers to maintain discipline and join their work,” he told a press conference at BGMEA Bhaban in the evening.
He said the BGMEA has already formed a nine-member probe body, led by its second vice president, to probe the Savar building collapse and the committee has been asked to submit its report within the next 10 days.
Atiqul Islam said the BGMEA has opened a bank account—BGMEA Disaster Relief Account—at IFIC Bank, Karwan Bazar branch, to help the victim’s families of Savar building collapse.
“BGMEA members, buyers and others can help the victims donating money through the bank account.”
About the Savar tragedy victims, he said the government is providing Tk 20,000 to every family of those workers killed for transportation of bodies and burial. “This is not compensation. Compensation will be distributed among the victim’s families.”
The BGMEA president also urged Rajuk to take a step to examine the buildings of RMG factories to avert further building collapse.
Thanking the government for arresting the owner of collapsed Rana Plaza, Sohel Rana, he demanded immediate arrest of structural designers and Rajuk officials involved in construction of the complex. UNB
