Gas deal: Nat’l Committee to protest Mar 18

Dhaka – The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port will observe a ‘protest day’ across the country on March 18 against a signed by the government with Posco Daewoo Corporation to award the deep sea gas block DS-12 to the South Korean firm.National Committee convener Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah and its member secretary Prof Anu Muhammad announced the programme in a statement on Wednesday.Terming the deal ‘suicidal’ for the country, they said the agreement is a glaring example of an anti-national interest as it allows the Korean company to export gas. “Through this deal, the company has not only been given the scope of gas export, but also many undue benefits like tax exemption and scope for raising gas price,” said the statement. The National Committee leaders also attributed the ‘secret understanding and unsolicited offer-based deal’ with the wrong policy and corruption.
