BNP leader Gayeswar, 30 others wounded: Violence spreads

Dhaka, Dec 25 – BNP standing committee member and candidate for Dhaka-3 constituency Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and 30 others were injured in an attack by unidentified criminals during his campaign in Keraniganj area yesterday evening.Goyeshwar sustained injuries in his head and is now undergoing treatment at Kakrail Islami Bank Central Hospital, Aminul Islam, the personal assistant of the BNP leader, said.
He also said that the other injured were also taking treatment from the same hospital.
Besides Goyeshwar, many BNP leaders and activists and some ruling party men were also injured across the country during the general election campaign slated to be held on December 30.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press conference yesterday expressed frustration over the ‘growing’ incidents of violence across the country, even after the army
deployment.
He alleged that their party leaders and activists were attacked by ruling party men and police in 28 constituencies, injuring over a hundred people, including 19 candidates, on Monday.
Ruling party men allegedly carried out attacks on the BNP leaders and activists while they were trying to start their election campaign in their respective constituencies across the country.
On the other hand, BNP party men were also allegedly carried out attacks in some places of the country on the election rallies of Awami League in Chattagram and Tangail.
In Keraniganj: a group of miscreants carried out the attack around 6:00 pm yesterday when Goyeshwar and his party men were carrying out the campaign in Chunkutia area, leaving at least 25 BNP men including Goyeshwar injured.
In Dhaka-4 constituency: BNP candidate Salahuddin Ahmed alleged that police did not allow him to bring out a procession from in front of his Syampur residence.
He claimed that he has been confined at his residence and raised a question as to why he won’t be allowed to carry out campaign when his opponent can do it.
The BNP candidate also alleged that at least 15 party activists have been arrested and accused the police of showing partial attitude to them.
In Chattgram: at least four men of the ruling party Awami League (AL) were injured as BNP men allegedly attack AL candidate and activists of Chattogram-4 at Madambibirhat Bhatiary area of Sitakunda in Chattogram yesterday.
The injured were identified as, Mohammad Saddam Hossain, Mohammad Raihan, Abu Saleh and Tayeb Uddin. They were admitted at Chattogram medical college hospital (CMCH) said Alauddin Talukdar, ASI of CMCH Police outpost.
Among the injured Mohammad Saddam Hossain is the general secretary of Jahanabad ward of Bhatiary union Parishad of Sitakunda while others are the leaders and activists of local Chattra League and Juba League, said local sources.
Delowar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) said, “The attack was carried out at around 11 am. They have blasted cocktails and petrol bombs. Three received burn injuries.”
CMCH sources said three of them were admitted at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of CMCH while one was admitted at casualty ward.
Didarul Alam, MP is contesting from Chattogram-4 with boat symbol in the upcoming 11th parliamentary national polls. He said, “We have a campaign program Jhanabad area. We were being gathered at the area and were preparing for the campaign at that time a group of BNP terrorists led by local Khurshid member hurled petrol bomb to kill me. Over the incident, our 10 leaders and activists were injured and five were admitted at CMCH.”
“I was saved by the leaders and activists. They are recognized terrorists who carried out sabotages since 2014. They carried out the attack to find a way that how they foil the election and the come out from the election,” added Didar at CMCH rushed to see the injured AL men.
However, BNP denied the allegation. Sitakunda Upazila BNP convener Taffazal Ahmed said, “The AL armed terrorists attack us. They attack BNP men in a campaign in that area.”
In Jashore: Kotwali police picked up Iqbal Kabir Jahid, a politburo member, Workers Party of Bangladesh from a rickshaw from Chaurasta area in Jashore town at around 10:15 am on Tuesday. He was freed from
the Kotwali police station about 20 minutes later, Jahid told journalists.
WP sources said leaders and activists of the party observed a sit-in on the premises of the office of deputy commissioner, Jashore on Monday protesting at the arrest of an activist of the party, who
police claimed as an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir. He was detained on December 18.
Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, general secretary, Jashore district unit of BNP told that the police picked up Golam Reza Dulu, vice president, Jashore district unit of the party, Noor-un-Nabi, president, Kotwali
thana unit of the party and Babu Hossain, president, Fatepur union council unit of Juba Dal, from the vehicle of Aninda Islam Amit, BNP candidate for Jashore -3 constituency at around 10 am on Tuesday.
At least 15 BNP men, who were not accused in any fresh case, were picked up by the police on them, he said.
Apurba Hasan, officer-in-charge, Kotwali police station confirmed the arrest of BNP leaders but not the WP leader. WP in a statement condemned the act of police. – Staff Reporter
