Gazipur city Polls: HC asks EC to accept candidature

The High Court on Sunday asked the Election Commission (EC) to accept the nomination paper of M Jahangir Alam, a Sammilito Nagarik Committee-backed mayoral candidate for the election to Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) slated for July 6.Passing the order upon a writ petition challenging the validity of the EC’s action, an HC division bench comprising Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Muhammd Khurshid Alam Sarkar also asked the EC to allocate Jahangir an election symbol.
Jahangir’s nomination paper was cancelled by the returning officer on June 10 for not submitting necessary papers regarding his resignation from the post of Sadar upazila vice chairman he held.
Then Jahangir made an appeal before the EC against the impugned decision of the returning officer over his candidature. The EC upheld the returning officer’s decision, turning down his appeal.
The dispute finally disposed of by the HC today (Sunday).
