Gazipur polls strengthened case for caretaker government: Mannan

Accusing the government of trying to snatch people’s verdict in the just-concluded Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election, mayor-elect MA Mannan on Sunday said GCC polls proved that a free, fair and neutral election is not possible without a non-party caretaker government.“The government has tried to grab people’s verdict through various plots. It’s very difficult to hold a neutral election under a party government,” Mannan said.
The GCC mayor-elect came up with the remark at a post-polls press conference at his election office at Chandna in Gazipur city.
Mannan, also a BNP chairperson’s adviser, became the first GCC mayor defeating his rival ruling Awami League-backed candidate Ajmat Ullah Khan with a big margin.
He sought support of Ajmat Ullah Khan who had discharged as the mayor of Tongi municipality for 17 years.
Gazipur district unit BNP president Fazlul Haque Milon and general secretary Quazi Saidul Alam Babul were, among others, present.
Meanwhile, Mannan went to the residence of Ajmat’s Tongi residence around 6pm, but Ajmat was not there at that time.
In albescence of Ajmat, his family members and ruling party men received Mannan with bouquets.
Later, Mannan talked to Ajmat over phone as he was busy consoling his supporters elsewhere.
