Gazipur RMG boiler blast kills 26 people, injures 47

Gazipur – A boiler explosion at a readymade garment factory near Tongi BSCIC Railway Station in Gazipur, about 25 kilometres north of capital Dhaka killed 26 persons on Friday night and Saturday morning. The death of 16 injured on Saturday raised the death toll to 26, UNB news agency reported.Of the deceased, four were identified as Subhas of Gopalpur upazila in Tangail, Jahangir of Bhola and Hannan and Edon of Comilla.
Sub-inspector Bachchu Miah, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp, said 21 injured were admitted to the hospital where three succumbed to their injures later.
Fire Service and Civil Defense control room telephone operator Ziaur Rahman said the boiler at ‘Tammako Garment Factory’ housed in a four-storey building exploded with a big bang around 6am.
The steel-framed building has started to collapse under the effects of the blaze.
The Officer-in-Charge of Tongi Police Station Firoz Talukder said at least 10 people were killed on the spot and 50 suffered injuries in the blast that triggered a huge fire.
Sub-inspector Billal Hossain of the police station said five bodies were taken to Tongi General Hospital.
The injured people were taken to different local hospitals and clinics.
On information, 20 fire-fighting units from Joydebpur, Tongi, Tajgaon and Sadar rushed in and trying to control the fire.
