Gopalganj housewife dies during C-section by ‘quack’

An expecting mother died on the operation table while giving birth through caesarian section reportedly conducted by self-proclaimed doctors at a private clinic in Tungipara upazila on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Roksana Begum, 30, wife of Md Azizul Mollah of Keralkopa village of the upazila. Aminul Islam, brother of the deceased, said Roksana was admitted to Tungipara Surgical Clinic on Thursday noon for delivery.

Owner of the clinic Nurul Huda Tuku along with his two sons and took her to the operation theatre around 9 pm though there was no doctor at the clinic, said Aminul adding that Roksana died on the operation table due to excessive bleeding.

Aminul Islam alleged that four more expecting mothers who came for caesarean section died at the clinic, but he did not provide further details of the incidents.

However, clinic owner Nurul Huda claimed that Gynecologist Dr Sadhan Basu was present with them during the operation, but he left the clinic when the patient’s condition turned critical.

Contacted, Tungipara Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Niaz Mohammad claimed that no physician named Dr Sadhan Basu is there in the district.

Following the latest incident, victim’s brother Aminul Islam filed a murder case accusing clinic owner Nurul Huda Tuku, his two sons — Md Meherab Hossain and Md Nurul — with Tungipara Police Station, said KM Enamul Kabir, officer-in-charge of the police station.

On Friday, police arrested Meherab Hossain who confessed to conducting the operation though they do not have any experience of performing critical surgery, said the OC adding that police are conducting drives to arrest the other accused.
