The government is constructing 158 new godowns across the country with a view to preserving another 1.05 lakh metric tons of food. Food Minister Quamrul Islam on Tuesday stated this in Parliament, replying to a starred question of Enamul Haque (Rajshahi-4). He also informed that under the Bangladesh Modern Food Storage Facilities project, the process to construct godowns (two for wheat and six for rice) with the capacity of five lakh metric tons is on. The Minister said that at present, there are five silos, 13 CSD and 605 LSD in the country. He said that in the last tenure of the present government, it increased the storage capacity from 14 lakh metric tons to 19 lakh metric tons through building new godowns and repairing the old ones. – UNB
