The BNP on Tuesday alleged that the regime has destroyed the Liberation War spirit through annihilating democracy and snatching people’s rights and termed the government an ‘illegal and usurper’ of power.
“People had spontaneously joined the Liberation War in 1971 with a dream of establishing a democratic and prosperous state and protecting their rights. But the current regime, which captured power illegally, has destroyed the Liberation War spirit by snatching people’s rights and jailing democracy,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave together with party chief Khaleda Zia on the occasion of the Victory Day.
Earlier in the day, Khaleda along with the party leaders and activists paid homage to the martyred freedom fighters placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar.
Fakhrul said the country’s independence and its future have been put at stake through misrule by the Awami League-led regime. “The nation is so unfortunate that there’s no democracy in the country even after 44 years of its independence. The government through its repressive acts, killings and enforced disappearances have snatched democracy and people’s rights.”
The BNP spokesman called upon people to get united under Khaleda Zia’s leadership to restore democracy and people’s rights to materialise the dreams of the martyred who laid down their lives for the country.
He said a fair and inclusive election under a non-party administration can help resolve the current political deadlock.
About the ruling party’s allegation that BNP is on a movement to save war criminals, he said the only aim of their agitation is to restore people’s all rights, including the one to vote. “The ruling party is making such remarks to divert people’s attention to a different direction and confuse them.”
Fakhrul said they will continue their movement until their movement turns successful.- UNB
