“We’ve enough preparation both from the government and the party (Awami League) as people are being sent to the flood-affected areas with adequate food in stock and to ensure shelter for the possible affected people,” she said. The Prime Minister was making remarks after receiving the report of the ‘National Wage and Productivity Commission-2015’ at her office. Turning to the flashflood in the Haor region and the recent flood in Sylhet region, Hasina feared that there could be natural disasters as the floodwater of Sylhet region may roll down triggering flood in the country’s Southern region in August. About government preparations in tackling flood, Hasina said, “We’ve a certain calculation as up to which areas this floodwater will go and which areas to be inundated. But, we’re taking steps in those areas which are now at flood risk.” Recalling the success of her government in tackling the longest flood in the country’s history back in 1998, Hasina said: “Such natural disasters might come but we’re ready to face that.” According to Water Development Board (WDB) and the Meteorological Department in Sylhet, heavy rains in Barak basin across the border were responsible for the flood. Over one lakh people have got marooned in several upazilas of Sylhet as downpours and onrush of water from the upstream inundated vast areas.
