Govt in conspiracy to snatch Gazipur City polls: Moudud

BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Friday alleged that the government is hatching various conspiracies to snatch people’s verdict in the Saturday’s Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls. “The government has become desperate to win the Gazipur City Corporation polls by any means. As part of the conspiracies, they’ve engaged 80 percent presiding officers loyal to them (in election activities),” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the allegation at a discussion, titled ‘The Current Political Perspective and Responsibilities of Patriotic Nationalist Force’ organised by National People’s Party (NPP) at the Jatiya Press Club.
Issuing a warning against the government, Moudud said: ‘The movement to oust the government will be launched from Gazipur if the government makes any attempt to rig the (GCC) polls.”
Accusing the government of hatching plots to taint the image of BNP-backed mayoral candidate in the GCC polls MA Mannan, he said: “Nobody now believes that free and fair election can be held under this government.”
The BNP policymaker criticized the Election Commission (EC) for what he said refraining from taking action against the government’s conspiracies. “It (EC) has turned into a subservient body of the government.”
Moudud categorically said: “No free and fair election is possible under this government and the Election Commission. And the next general election must be held under the non-party caretaker government.”
