Govt indulges in plot to perpetuate power: Moudud

BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Friday alleged that the government is again conspiring to amend the constitution to hang onto power.   “The government is not at ease even after the 15th amendment to the constitution… they’re now again making a new plot to amend the charter to perpetuate power,” he said.
Addressing a discussion, Moudud also warned that they will create a strong resistance together with people if the government attempts to amend the constitution in a bid to prolong its stay in power.   Jatiyatabadi Samabay Dal organised the discussion on constitutional crisis over the next election at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.
“I’d like to make it clear, we will support any attempt for organising the election under a non-partisan caretaker government,” Moudud said.
The former law minister also alleged the 15th Constitutional amendment took away the rights of the people.
“They have added to the charter that none will ever amend the first three parts of it. Such a rule is unprecedented.”
He also promised to scrap the amendment if his party is voted to power in future.
Moudud said his party will annul the 15th amendment to the Constitution if it returns to power through the next polls. “Awami League doesn’t believe in the sanctity of the Constitution. They only use it for making political gains. They ripped the Constitution to shreds only to retain power,” he added.
The BNP leader said there is no alternative to reinstating the caretaker government system, no matter how many tricks the government resorts to. “The government can’t ignore the pressure from home and abroad.” Moudud, also a former Law Minister, said his party will extend its support if the government takes initiatives for restoration of the caretaker government through amending the constitution in the upcoming parliament session.
He also threatened that they will realise their demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party government through a street movement if the government doest not resolve the political crisis through amending the constitution.  Moudud also said the BNP-led 18-party alliance will not allow the government to hold any election under the current prime minister in the country. – UNB
