Govt lodges cases to keep Tarique away from politics: Fakhrul

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that the government is implicating their senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman in ‘false’ cases to keep him away from politics.
“We consider Tarique Rahman as a future leader. The government is filing false cases against him to keep him away from politics though they couldn’t prove any charge against him,” he said.
Fakhrul made these remarks while addressing a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking Tarique’s 50th birthday. He alleged that all the cases filed against Tarique are conspiratorial and politically motivated.
The BNP leader said that the enemies of the country who had killed Ziaur Rahman in 1981 masterminded the 1/11 takeover also tried to annihilate Tarique.
Referring to recent court summon against Tarique in a defamation case, he said the government is constantly hatching plots to resist the BNP senior vice chairman from returning home.
Fakhrul asked the government to stop such vengeful politics. Otherwise, he warned, people will not spare them for their misdeeds.
The BNP leader alleged that the current ‘illegal’ government is pushing the country towards destruction by its misrule, repression and corruption.
“There’s no alternative to waging a united movement to get rid of this situation.”
He also accused the ruling party leaders of distorting the Liberation War history. “Don’t speak like the blind without having knowledge. First acquire knowledge then talk about it.”
Fakhrul said Tarique is presenting the true history with historical references while the ruling party men are making indecent remarks against him having failed to counter those.
BNP and its associate bodies chalked out various programmes to celebrate Tarique’s birthday in a befitting manner.
The programmes include discussions, milad mahfils, voluntary blood donation, art competitions, screening documentaries, health service, prayers and recitation from the holy Quran. – UNB
