Govt move for unilateral polls now crystal clear: BNP

The BNP has brushed aside the Prime Minister’s speech in Parliament that the general election lurking around the corner will be held under an ‘all-party’ government that she will lead.Sheikh Hasina called on Wednesday the chief opposition party campaigning for a “non-party’ caretaker government to join the “all-party election-time cabinet.
The Prime Minister also said the balloting will take place in line with the Constitution. Hours later, the BNP gave its reaction at party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan.
Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The Prime Minister’s statement has made it clear that they are moving towards a one-party ruling system through a one-party election.”
“We think her speech will deepen the crisis.” “We demand that the government immediately arrange for the election under a non-party caretaker government by holding talks with the opposition party.” “Otherwise, the government will be responsible for any (untoward) situation,” he warned.
The government had scrapped the caretaker government provision from the Constitution effecting the 15th Amendment.
The BNP has ever since demanding the restoration of the caretaker government, but the government has refused, finally forming an ‘all-party’ government to this end.
Keeping in tact Parliament and ministerial posts of this government will stand in the way of a level-playing field for all, the BNP spokesperson added.
To a question from the media, he replied, “The opposition party still wants the crisis to be resolved through talks. The nation will not accept any unilateral election.”
