Dhaka-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said the government is overhauling obsolete laws and reforming the judiciary as a country cannot move forward without modern and time-befitting effective laws.“No country can move forward without modern laws….we’re overhauling old laws in Parliament to make those time-befitting ones,” she said.
The Prime Minister was speaking at an iftar mahfil organised by Supreme Court Lawyers’ Association at the premises of the apex court.
She said her government is trying hard to ensure that the judiciary and lawyers could perform better in a convenient and congenial atmosphere.
“So, we’re doing what is necessary and many projects are being implemented to that end.”
Sheikh Hasina also said the government has taken numerous projects to reform the county’s judiciary in the interest of the mass people.
She, however, bemoaned that a Tk 216 crore project taken during the AL government in 1996 was shelved by the subsequent BNP-Jamaat regime.
“Returning to power, we’ve re-launched the project.”
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh is now marching forward, as her government established it as a role model at the global stage.
“Bangladesh has made a good progress on economic front…we’re spending 90 percent of our budget on development projects, we’ve increased our per capita income, and also our reserve…the inflation is now under control. We’ve also been able to upgrade the GDP growth to 7.05 percent,” she told her audience.
About the Padma Bridge, she said it was a challenge to her government to construct this big bridge with its own fund. “But, we’re constructing it on our own …this has changed the country’s image abroad.”
