Govt out to brand BNP as militant party: Fakhrul

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the government is trying to brand BNP as a militant and extremist party though militancy emerged in the country during Awami League rule.
“Militancy emerged in the country during Awami League tenure. Militant kingpin Shaikh Abdur Rahman was a close relative of an Awami League top leader. The BNP government had caught and tried the militants,” he said on Sunday.Addressing the triennial council of Syedpur BNP at local town hall, he said, “The government is now trying to identify BNP a militant and radical party to make political gain.”
Fakhrul, whi is also the acting secretary general of the party, said their stand that the government arranged a farcical election on January 5 has proved true following the recent remark of Prime Minister’s senior adviser HT Imam about the polls.
“HT Imam has revealed how they (AL) used the January-5 election and how they shattered the people’s hopes and aspirations, and democracy,” he added.
Earlier, on Wednesday, HT Imam, pointed out the advantage of having party men in the administration, and how the AL benefited from them. “Days before the January-5 polls, many pro-Awami League officials were included in the mobile courts that helped the government resist the BNP-Jamaat’s bid to thwart the election. They (pro-AL officials) stood beside us,” Imam said.
Fakhrul said HT Imam has exposed the mask of Awami League over the January-5 election.
He said the January-5 election was not accepted both at home and abroad, the BNP leader observed even Indian diplomats at a meeting in Dhaka on Saturday talked in favour of a fresh inclusive election.
He repeated his call for the government to arrange a snap election under a non-party administration with the participation of all parties as per the hopes and aspirations of people.
Otherwise, he warned, they together with people will unseat the regime and establish a democratic and pro-people government through an election under a non-partisan administration.
Fakhrul said their alliance with Jamaat is electoral one and for a united movement. “Awami League also had carried out a movement with Jamaat against BNP in 19196.” – UNB
