Govt out to hijack Gazipur city polls results: Fakhrul

Opposition BNP on Thursday alleged that the government is conspiring to hijack the results of the election to Gazipur City Corporation slated for July 6.“The results of the four city corporations’ polls have made the government crazy. They’re now desperate to win the Gazipur election by any means and crafting evil designs to snatch its results using the administration and spreading money,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, the BNP spokesman also alleged that the government is spreading huge money to have the results in its favour.
Dhaka University unit of Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) organised the discussion, titled “Tarique Rahman: Future Bangladesh’.
Accusing the Election Commission of playing a biased role, Fakhrul said the ruling party leaders and activists are constantly breaching the election code of conduct, but the election commission is not taking any action even after lodging complaints to it.
Raising the question about the transparency of Kishoreganj-4 by-polls’ results, the BNP spokesman said the results were announced n within a short period though there were very remote centres in haor areas.  “The Kishoreganj by-election has proved further that no fair election is possible under this regime.”
Fakhrul alleged that the government is spreading ‘false propaganda’ against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman as it has got scared with his popularity.
Former Dhaka University VC Moniruzzaman Miah, former DU pro-VC Prof AFM Yusuf Haider film director and producer Gazi Mazharul Anwa, among others, addressed the programme.                – UNB
