Hafiz hits back at Ashraful, calls countrywide sit-in, arrested

Dhaka – Opposition BNP on Sunday strongly protested Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam’s remark about its chairperson

Khaleda Zia and termed it a delirium.
“Syed Ashraful’s remark about the opposition leader is nothing but a delirium. We want to tell him: hold a rally removing law enforcers and
then people will see whose rally draws how many people,” said BNP vice chairman Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed.
At a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club, before his arrest, the BNP leader also said, “I’m challenging the government to hold the
election under a non-party administration and then you’ll see how many seats you get.”
Earlier at a press conference, Ashraful Islam said the opposition leader has failed again to involve people in her programmes.
He also alleged, “She (Khaleda) wanted to stage a drama and she has been successful to do that. Many people got entertained with her
drama.”
Hafiz also alleged that the AL general secretary also made indecent remarks about the opposition leader’s dress-up. “We condemn it.”
He said Awami League through obstructing the opposition to stage its programme proved once again that they are not a democratic party.
“They (AL) had annihilated democracy in 1975 by establishing Baksal.
They’re aging going to do so by holding a unilateral and voter-less election on January 5.”
Demanding that there is huge public support for their March for Democracy programme, the BNP leader alleged that the government itself
created a blockade to foil it.
Hafiz also denounced the attacks on journalists, lawyers and Dhaka University teachers allegedly by the ruling party men as they
separately tried to join the opposition’s programme.
The BNP leader also announced that the 18-party leaders and activists will observe sit-in on roads, railways and waterways until the
government cancels the January-5 election schedule.
He also said the March for Democracy programme will be held in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on Monday. The programme will begin
around 10am and the opposition leader can join it anytime.
Later, plainclothes police arrested Hafiz as he was getting into his car after coming out the Press Club after the press conference. – UNB
