Dhaka – A daylong hartal will be enforced in Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong on Wednesday protesting the killing of four people in police firing at Gandamara village during a demonstration against the construction of a coal-fired power plant there, the UNB news agency reported.
Chhatra Oiko Forum convener Shahnewaz Chowdhury announced the shutdown from a human chain programme held at the Chittagong Press Club on Tuesday.The platform also demanded cancellation of the power plant in Banshkhali.
Meanwhile, another human chain was formed by Banshkhali Sachetan Nagarik Samaj at the press club around 3pm demanding exemplary punishment of those responsible for the incident.
On the other hand, a group of local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists formed a human chain in front of the upazila parishad of Banshkhali in the afternoon, protesting the killing.
They blamed former Gandamara UP chairman Liakat Ali for the cash and demanded his punishment.
Meanwhile, three cases have been filed against some 6,200 people in connection with Monday’s clash at Gandamara village in Banshkhali upazila that left four people dead.
Bahar Uddin, sub-inspector of Banshkhali Police Station, filed a case against 57 identified and 3,200 unidentified people for attacking police and obstructing them from performing their duties, said officer-in-charge of the police station Swapan Mazumdar.
Besides, Moulvi Bashir, a relative of two slain siblings, filed a case against six identified and 1,500 unidentified people for killing Anwar alias Angur, 40, and his brother Murtuza Ali, 42, sons of late
Ashraf Ali of Uttar Charpara village, while Monwara Begum, 45, wife of deceased Zakir Ahmed, filed the other case against 1,500 unidentified people, said additional superintendent of police (South) Habibur Rahman. Meanwhile, a probe committee, led by additional district magistrate Mohammad Muminur Rahman, has been formed to look into the incident, said deputy commissioner Mohammad Mezbah Uddin.
The probe committee has been asked to submit its report within seven days, the DC added.
Additional police have been deployed in the area as a tense situation was prevailing there following Monday’s incident
Earlier on Monday, four people, including the two brothers, were killed in ‘police firing’ at Gandamara village in Banshkhali upazila during a demonstration against the construction of a coal-fired power
plant there.
Twenty people, including 10 cops, were also injured as the villagers clashed with the police during the demonstration.
