Hartal passes off amid violence

he dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami passed off across the country on Tuesday amid sporadic violence.

The party observed hartal in protest against the verdict of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah in war crimes charges.

A person was killed and 43 people including 11 cops were injured in different parts of the country during hartal hours.

A person was killed in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir men and law enforcers during the hartal in Chittagong.

The unidentified man was killed in a clash between police and pro-hartal activists in Chittagong on Tuesday.

The clash took place while pro hartal activists brought out a sudden procession at Alongkar intersection in the port city at around 1:15pm immediately after declaring Quader Mollah verdict.

However, no major clash took place in the capital during the hartal excluding exposition of several dozens of cocktails and clash between cops and hartal supporters.

banglanews correspondents report that 13 people including three police personnel were injured in capital’s Shajahanpur, Mirpur and Mohammadpur College gate areas.

A group of Chhatra Shibir activists numbering 4 to 5 swooped on a patrol bus of police in front of Brac Center in city’s Mohakhali area in the morning that injured one police official injured.

Besides, a police officer was wounded in a cocktail blast in city’s Shajahanpur area in the morning while another cop was injured in Mirpur.

Pro-hartal activists attacked on a city bus that left 10 passengers including its driver and helper injured in College gate area.

Apart from this, 15 people were injured in Bhola, two in Thakurgaon, two police officials in Chuadanga, four cops in Satkhira, one cop in Sylhet and three people including one police official in Comilla.

In Sylhet, some 20 people, including policemen, were injured in sporadic clashes between police and Jamaat-Shibir men during hartal.

Jamaat men threw brickbats and blasted cocktails during the hartal hours while police prevented them. Police opened fire rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the agitators

Police held 10 Jamaat men from the spot.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Ejaz Ahmed said five police personnel were injured in the clash.

In Rajshahi, Shibir activists locked into a clash with law enforcers during hartal in Rajshahi University area in the morning.

Shibir activists threw brick bats and cocktails aiming police when their procession was hindered.

Later pickets vandalized and torched a human hauler of police.

Police fired around 50 tear shells and sound grenade to take the situation under control.

Meanwhile, law enforcers held at least 91 Chhatra Shibir activists from different parts of the country including capital’s Rampura, Mohakhali, Jatrabari and Dhanmondi, Jigatola, Shajahanpur, Mirpur and Ramna during hartal.

Police also held 12 Jamat-Shibir activists from Gazipur, 18 from Chandpur, 11 from Cox’s Bazar, nine from Brahmanbaria, two from Khagrachhari, two from Kushtia, two from Comilla, one from Narayanganj, among others, across the country.

Earlier in the day, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 sentenced Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah to life in prison for his involvement in crimes against humanity during liberation war in 1971. banglanews24.com
