Five suspected Islami Chhatra Shibir men were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for picketing during the first day of a 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat in the city on Tuesday.
Those were jailed are Golam Azam, 22, M Akhtaruzzaman, 23, M Anas Kamal, 21, M Alauddin, 25, and M Bilal Hossain, 30.
A group of Shibir men were reportedly trying to picket in Armanitola area around 6am.
A team of Bangshal Police Station dispersed the activists of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. They also arrested Golam Azam and Akhtaruzzaman from the spot at that time.
Later, the duo was produced before a mobile court, led by executive magistrate Shilo Roy, which awarded them six months’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, a team of Lalbagh Police Station arrested Anas Kamal from near Baby Ice Cream Factory while Alauddin and Bilal from Nayapaltan area at about 10:45 am.
Later, the same mobile court sentenced them also to six months’ jail. – UNB
