Hasina’s stance on Hefazat ‘mockery with nation’: Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday sharply criticised the Prime Minister for her remarks in parliament over the May-5 crackdown on Hefazat-e-Islam activists “terming it a mockery with the nation”.“The Prime Minister’s remarks in parliament yesterday (Wednesday) about the May-5 incident are really painful. She said Hefajat men got down on streets splashing red colour over their bodies pretending to be dead but fled when police came to them. It’s nothing but a mockery. I don’t know who has given her the right to ridicule the nation,” he told a discussion.
Describing the May-5 crackdown as a brutal incident, the BNP spokesman said the Prime Minister in fact should have expressed sorrow over the incident but unfortunately she is making unguarded remarks.
He also accused the leader of the House (Hasina) of continuously lying in parliament on various national issues.
Zia Smrity Pathagar arranged the discussion, titled ‘Grantha Adda’ (Gathering of Book Lovers) at the Jatiya Press Club.
Fakhrul came down hard on the Prime Minister for her remarks why BNP is demanding the restoration of the caretaker government and asked Sheikh Hasina to explain again before the nation why she had made the same demand in 1996.
Earlier in the day, Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina addressing meeting with her party grassroots leaders from Pirojpur district said if any caretaker government comes to power again it will not quit until the doomsday. Hasina questioned the logic behind BNP’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Fakhrul said Hasina used to speak against the unconstitutional government but she welcomed the Fakhruddin-Moeenuddin-led illegal government claiming it as the result of their movement.
He said the current regime also did not take any action against this illegitimate administration rather leaglised their activities as per Sheikh Hasina’s promise she made to them at the airport before going abroad on parole.
Turning down the government’s claim that they will be able to hold the next general election in a free and fair manner like that of the just-held city corporation polls, the BNP leader said it is not justified to compare the national election with the local body ones.
He said there is no alternative to arranging the next election under a non-party administration considering the country’s latest political situation, political culture and people’s mindset.
The BNP spokesman claimed that not only BNP but also the country’s veteran politicians like Dr Kamal Hossain and Badrudozza Chowdhury, civil society members and the country’s 90 percent people think the next election will not be free and fair if it is not held under a non-party administration.
Fakhrul once gain urged the government to reinstate the caretaker government system for the sake of welfare of the country’s people without buying time further and create a level-playing field so that all can participate in the election.( Source: UNB)
