HC bans heavy vehicles from Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge

The High Court on Monday imposed a ban on plying of heavy vehicles over the Bangabandhu Bridge.Justice Kazi Rezaul Haq and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order taking cognisance of a newspaper report.
The court also gave an order to demolish all the illegal shops and establishments built along the bridge within a week.
It asked the chief engineer of Bridge Division to submit in a week the computer-based information on how many vehicles crossed the bridge from January this year till date.
It also asked the toll-colleting organizations – Shamim Enterprise and United Development Corporation of Bangladesh – to explain why they are realising fees for keeping vehicles in the parking area ahead of crossing the bridge.
The HC also issued a rule upon the Bridge division secretary, the executive director of Bangladesh Bridge Authorities, the Home Secretary and the chief engineer of Bridge Division to explain why their inaction in stopping illegal plying of heavy vehicles over the bridge should not be declared illegal.
The Bridge division secretary, the executive director of Bangladesh Bridge Authorities, the Home Secretary, the chief engineer of the Bridge Division, Shamim Enterprise, the United Development Corporation of Bangladesh, the Deputy Commissioners and the Police Supers of Tangail and Sirajganj districts and the officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge western side police station have been asked to respond to the rule in two weeks.
