HC for renaming streets named after ‘anti-liberation persons’

Dhaka, November 14 – The High Court (HC) on Thursday again ordered the government to rename within 90 days streets and installations named after anti-liberation persons across the country. The HC directed authorities concerned to convert or rename those streets and installations, which were installed with the names of anti-liberation war, after the freedom fighters of respective localities.
The HC bench also ordered the authorities concerned to submit the compliance report before it by February 23 over the matter.
The HC bench comprising Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Ahmed Sohel came up with the orders after hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.
Dhaka University professor and historian Dr Muntassir Mamun and journalist Shahriar Kabir filed the writ in 2012, and after holding primary hearing on the matter, the High Court on May 14, 2012, issued a rule asking as to why it shall not pass the order to rename such streets and installations.
In its rule, the HC bench asked the government to explain why structures named after collaborators of Pakistanis should not be renamed and why they should not be directed to rename those roads, buildings and other structures after freedom fighters.
But the order is yet to be implemented and that is why the court has allowed time to comply with the order for the last time.
Barrister AK Rashidul Haque moved the case for the petitioners, while deputy attorney general Amit Das Gupta appeared for the state. – Staff Reporter
