Dhaka – The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday granted bail to six pro-BNP ward Councillors of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) in an arson case, clearing the way of their walk out of jail.The bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah granted the ad-interim bail after hearing an appeal filed by the accused councillors of different wards of GCC seeking bail in case filed for setting fire on a vehicle.
The Councillors are-Tanvir Ahmed, Md Shafiuddin, Sheikh Mohammad Alek, Hannan Miah alias Hanu, Md Shahidul Islam and Faisal Ahmed Sarkar. They are still in the Gazipur jail, their council Advocate Abu Hanif told newsmen. He said there is no legal bar for his clients to go out of the jail after the High Court order.
He said police filed the case against them with Joydevpur Police Station on April 15, last year. A Gazipur court on July 11, last, sent them to jail rejecting their bail pleas.
The accused persons filed the appeal with the High Court on Wednesday challenging the Gazipur court’s order rejecting their bail.
Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Shaikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir told newsmen that the government will move an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC order that allowed them bail. – Special Correspondent
