HC moved on DU senate

The High Court was moved on Thursday challenging legality of a special session of the Dhaka University senate.
This session had been called to elect the university’s Vice Chancellor.
Senate is the highest policy making body of the university.
The petition was filed by Prof AKM Yusuf Haider, former VC of the university, Botany department Chairman Prof Abdul Aziz and Journalist Mahfuz Ullah seeking a stay order on the session.
The writ also sought the court’s directives to foil any possible decision that the Senate may arrive at.
It also sought a ruling on why a stay on the VC’s elections could not be issued.
Four persons including the VC and Registrar were made parties to the writ.
On behalf of the three petitioners Barrister M Belaiat Hossain filed the writ.
However, it was not taken up for hearing on Thursday.
The special session of the senate was likely to be held on Saturday.
Though the DU senate is a 105-member body, at present it has only 50 members.
The writ was filed pointing out that VC election panel could not be formed with so less members.
However, the university authority has claimed that there was no legal hindrance to hold the elections under the present circumstances.
Chancellor has appointed Professor A A M S Arefin Siddique as vice chancellor on January 15, 2009.
According to the rules, a three-member panel has to be elected by senate members, one of them would then be appointed as VC by the President.
