Dhaka, March 9 – The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday set Sunday for passing its order on the bail plea submitted on behalf of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is in the prison after being convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.The High Court bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order as the defence brought the matter to its attention.
The High Court on February 22 asked Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka, which convicted Khaleda Zia and five others in the graft case, to send the case documents within 15 days.
The trial court on February 8 sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
The court also sentenced other five accused, including Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, to 10-year imprisonment each.
The other accused persons are former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and late Ziaur Rahman’s nephew Mominur Rahman. The court also fined the convicts Taka 2.10 crore each for their role in the scam.
Khaleda is now in the old Dhaka Central Jail located on the capital’s Nazimuddin Road. – Special Correspondent
