HC wants to know more on RU

The High Court has asked if a police action at the Rajshahi University is being probed and whether a case has been filed against the ‘armed attackers’ who fired at protesting students last month.
The bench of Justices Mirza Hussain Haider and Muhammad Khurshid Alam has ordered Deputy Attorney General Al Amin to inform the court of the steps, in any, within a week.Monday’s order comes after Supreme Court lawyer Jyotirmoi Borua filed a petition on behalf of 14 teachers of the public university on February 18.
They had appealed to the court for a rule on why the police firing on the ‘peaceful programme of the general students’ should not be declared illegal.
Police had done a baton-charge, burst tear shells, and fired from their shotguns, injuring 50 among a large body of students protesting the university’s decision to increase tuition fee and introduce evening classes on Feb 2.
Armed members of the ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League had also taken part in the attack, leading to an indefinite closure of the university.
The Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner and OC of Motihar Police Station have been made respondents to the petition.-bdnews24.com
