70 tonnes wheat seized in Bagerhat

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard seized 70 metric tons of government wheat while being smuggled by a vessel in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat district on Sunday night.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Coast Guard West Zone conducted a drive at ‘MV Mathbaria-1’ near Godownghat around 10:30 pm.During the drive, the law enforcers recovered 70 metric tons of wheat which were being taken to Satkhira.
The coastguards also arrested three crewmembers of the vessel. They are M Ayub Ali, M Joynal Khan and M Azim Hawlader.
However, the smuggler fled the scene sensing the presence of the coastguards.
Later, the seized wheat and the arrested people were handed over to Mongla Police Station.
Lt Commander Atikur Rahman Bhuiyan, staff officer (operation) of Coast Guard West Zone, said the wheat worth Tk 20 lakh were procured from black market. – UNB
