Hemp, drug peddlers held in Jessore, Barisal

Police arrested a hemp peddler along with 75 packs of hemp at
Mandalgati village in Sadar upazila early Tuesday.
The arrested was identified as Raisul alias Golam Rasul, son of Abdur
Rab of the village.
Police said on secret information, a team of police conducted a raid
at the house of Rasul at about 1.00am and recovered the cannabis after
searching the house.
Later, police arrested Rasul for his involvement in hemp peddling.
In another development a court on Tuesday sentenced a drug peddler to
life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) in Barisal.
The court also fined the convict Tk20,000, in default of which he will
have to suffer six months more in jail.
The lifer was identified as Sajjad Hossain, 40, son of Khalek Kazi, a
resident of Nabagram Road area of the city.
Muhammad Matiur Rahman, additional district and sessions judge of
Barisal, handed down the verdict to Sajjad in presence of him.
According to the prosecution, members of Rapid Action Battalion
(Rab-8) arrested Sajjad along with 13 bottles of Indian Phensidyl
syrup, 35 empty bottles of it and 1.5 litre loose Phensidyl from his
house on September 21, 2011.
Rab-8 deputy assistant director Kazi Hamidul Huq lodged a case with
Barisal Kotwali police station against Sajjad in this connection.
Later, Sub-inspector Iranur Rahman, also investigation officer of the
case, submitted charge sheet.
After examining 11 witnesses and necessary evidence, the court
pronounced the verdict against him under the Narcotics Control
Act-1990. -UNB, Barisal
