Hifazat-e Islam has accused police of giving out incorrect, confusing and concocted information about the May 5-6 action by security agencies in Motijheel, Dhaka.
A statement by the Chittagong-based group, accused of widespread violence during its indefinite sit-in at Motijheel, claimed police were trying to confuse the people.
“An example of confusing the nation has been set by publicising false and fabricated information against Hifazat instead of forming a judicial probe body to look into the matter (May 5 crackdown),” the group said in a statement on Friday.
Suspected Hifazat activists were said to have unleashed violence in and around Motijheel on May 5 during its indefinite sit-in to press for its controversial 13-point charter of demands. The law-enforcing agencies evicted them in a late-night raid.
Police on Thursday claimed they had identified seven organisations that had played a vital role in the violence triggered by Hifazat in the capital’s business hub.
Additional Inspector General AKM Shahidul Haque told a press conference these bodies belonged to the same axis.
The groups identified are Jamaat-e-Islami, Nezami Islami, Khilafat Majlis, Khilafat Andolan, Jamaayate Olama, Islami Oikya Jote and Muslim League.
A day after the media briefing, Hifazat claimed around 1,500 of its activists, injured during the crackdown, were undergoing treatment at various parts of Bangladesh.
Hifazat claimed Awami League ‘terrorists’ had burnt the Quran and a mosque near the Baitul Mukarram.
The government has maintained that Hifazat and Jamaat-Shibir activists had set fire to thousands of copies of the Quran and burnt the prayer mat at the national mosque.
Booksellers claimed over 50,000 copies of books were reduced to ashes that day. In the statement, Hifazat said ‘the people’ expect a neutral role from police.“History will not forgive anyone if there is any deviation.
“Those who had instigated and attacked will face dire consequences in both this world and the hereafter,” the statement said. – bdnews24.com
