Agitated locals put up barricade on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway on Friday morning
after a robbery took place in the house of a Khelafat Majlish leader in Bahubal upazila
headquarters.
The blockade disrupted traffic on the highway for four hours.
Sources said a gang of robbers numbering 10 to 12 entered the house of Mawlana Jaki
by cutting the grill of the first floor and made its inmates hostage
at gunpoint. They also looted valuables worth Tk1.75 lakh and 42 bhories of gold ornaments.
At one stage, locals chased the robbers after hearing screams of the
house inmates. The robbers fled the scene leaving their private car with firearms and a
sketch of the house they raided.
Following the robbery incident, locals barricaded the Dhaka-Sylhet
Highway in Bahubal from 4:00am to 8:00am.
Later, they withdrew the barricade after an assurance from Additional
Superintendent of Police Tofayel Ahmed to arrest the robbers.
