Hilsa festival begins in Chandpur tomorrow

A five-day ‘Hilsa Festival’ will begin at Chandpur Shilpakala Academy to boost
production of the delicious fish to meet the demand for protein.
The festival is jointly being organised by Grameenphone and Chaturanga, a local cultural
organization, to create awareness among fishermen about the adverse impacts of catching
jatka or small Hilsa by using illegal current nets in the rivers.
Organizers hoped that a large number of people including sellers and buyers of different
kinds of delicious fish of Meghna and other rivers will join the festival.
Secretary general of the festival committee Haroon-al-Rasheed said the lost glorious
days of Hilsa of chandpur, one of the main hilsa business center of the country, should be
protected for economic benefit of the country.
He said that’s why awareness should be raised among the people to protect hilsa for our
national interest.
Deputy commissioner of Chandpur district Mohammad Ismail Hossain will inaugurate
the festival. -BSS, Chandpur
