Holy Ashura observed recalling the sacrifice of Kerbala 

Dhaka, Oct 1 (UNB) – Ashura was observed across the country on Sunday, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), with due religious fervour and solemnity.On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom at the hands of Yazid’s soldiers on the bank of the Euphrates in the desert of Kerbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).
The day was a closed public holiday. Many Muslim devotees fasted symbolising the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain while others offered special prayers for his salvation and the for peace and progress of the Muslim Ummah.
Members of the Shia community brought out Tazia processions in the city in the morning marking the day.
The Tazia procession started from Imambara Husaini Dalan in the Old part of Dhaka city with a police escort.
Adequate security measures were taken around Imambara Husaini Dalan to ensure smooth observation of Holy Ashura.
Apart from Husaini Dalan, police were deployed on the rooftops of some buildings at some major points around the Imambara for security reasons.
Enhanced security was also provided in the Imambara where the Shia community gathered to commemorate the day, which is one of mourning.
In a departure from tradition, police banned carrying of metal weapons, knives, swords and other sharp weapons during the Tazia procession.
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV channels are airing special programmes highlighting the significance of the day. – UNB
