Holy Ashura observed

Dhaka – The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SM), was observed in the country on Friday with due religious solemnity. On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom in the hands of soldiers of Yazid at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).
Shi’a Muslims brought out a huge procession, known as ‘Tazia’, from Imambara at Hussaini Dalan in old part of the capital.
Besides, processions were brought out from different parts of the city, including Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Purana Paltan areas.
In the processions, the Shi’a Muslims expressed mourning and grief by flagellating themselves on the back with chains, beating their heads intending to connect them with the sufferings of Imam Hussain (RA).
The day was a closed public holiday.
Different religious organisations held various programmes to observe the day in a benefiting manner.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other private TV channels and radio stations aired special programmes, while newspapers published special articles highlighting the significance of the day.
Imam Hossain (RA) and his fellows were ambushed by the forces of Yazid on a journey towards Kufa. They were deprived of food and water, and many of them were put to death. Eventually, Imam Hossain (RA) was brutally assassinated. – UNB
