Housewife ‘killed for dowry’

A housewife in Jessore has allegedly been killed over dowry, police say. Rikta Ghosh, 19, was the wife of Shipon Ghosh of the Sadar Upazila.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station Sharmin said Rikta’s body was recovered from their Raimanik village residence on Friday morning.Her husband and father-in-law have been detained over the death, she said.
“We are questioning them,” the police officer said.
Rikta’s father Mihir Ghosh said his daughter was married off to Shipon nine months ago. He had paid Tk 280,000 as dowry during the marriage.
“Shipon often used to torture my daughter demanding another Tk 20,000 as dowry,” he said.
“She died on Thursday night when her in-laws severely beat her,” Mihir told bdnews24.com.
Bangladesh has banned dowry system. Dowry is any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly by one party of the marriage to the other party.
The Dowry Prohibition Act says any person accused of giving or receiving or abetting dowry shall receive a jail sentence of minimum one year and a maximum of five years with or without fine. – bdnews24.com
