Voicing deep concern over the recent spate in killings and abductions, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Mizanur Rahman on Monday feared that the country’s human rights may be at stake if the law order situation continues to deteriorate. “Human rights situation gets endangered in a country where law and order continues to deteriorate…the recent growing incidents of killing and abduction indicate the slide in law and order situation,” he said. Mizanur Rahman made the remarks while talking to reporters after attending a roundtable discussion at Cirdap auditorium in the city. ActionAid Bangladesh arranged the roundtable titled ‘Universal Periodic Review and Rights of the Indigenous people: Bangladesh Perspective’. The NHRC chief said they have already put forwarded some recommendations to the government to stop abductions and killings and protect human rights. Their recommendations include not arresting any one by law enforcers in plainclothes, showing their ID cards when law enforcers will go to arrest anyone or conduct a drive and keeping at least two local people as witnesses before arresting any person. He claimed the government has accepted and implemented some of their suggestions. “All of our recommendations should be implemented.” Mizanur said they will move the High Court, if necessary, for giving the government and the law enforcers some specific directions in light of their recommendations to stop abductions, murder and forced disappearances. – UNB
