HR org Ain-O-Salish Kendra for judicial probe of ‘gunfight’

Dhaka, June 3 – Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), a human rights organisation, on Sunday demanded a judicial inquiry into all the “gunfight” incidents including the killing of Teknaf ward councillor Akramul Haque in Cox’s Bazar. It also demanded immediately stop the so-called gunfights being carried out in the country in the name of drives against drug peddlers.
The demands were made through a press release issued by the rights organization yesterday.
“The ASK is strongly urging the government to put an end to the ongoing extrajudicial killings in order to pave the way to ensure rule of law and practice of human rights,” said the release.
The ASK expressed a grave concern over the ongoing “gunfights” during drives against drug paddlers and called upon the government to ensure security to the family members of Akramul Haque, who was killed what the RAB claimed in a gunfight on May 27.
The killing of Akramul Haque, a ward councillor of Teknaf municipality and local Awami League leader has created a wide controversy over his involvement in drug dealing particularly after his wife revealed audio clips of phone conversations.
Speaking at a press conference at Cox’s Bazar Press Club, Akramul’s wife Ayesha Begum alleged that her husband was murdered in cold blood. She also gave journalists four unverified audio clips of chilling conversations in support of her claim. In one of the clips, a female voice is heard continuously screaming over a mobile phone hearing gunshots during a phone call.
RAB claimed that Akramul, who had been Teknaf Upazila Jubo League president for 13 years, was a top-listed drug dealer but his family members, relatives and people who knew him very well refuted the claim saying that he was never involved drug trading.
