Huge arms & ammunition recovers from a lake in Uttara

Huge quantities of firearms and ammunition were recovered from a lake in the city’s Uttara area on Saturday.Bidhan Tripura, Deputy Commissioner (Uttara division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said they had a tip-off that some travel bags stuffed with something illegal were dumped into the canal in Sholahati of Uttara Sector-16 near Mirpur Beribandh under Turag Police Station from a black Pajero jeep in between 3pm and 4pm.
Following the information, police along with Fire Service men conducted a drive there, he said.
Firefighters, including divers, pulled out eight bags from the canal till filing of this report around 9:45pm. Ninety-seven pistols, including 95 foreign ones, 1060 bullets, 263 magazines and 10 bayonets were found in bag. The drive was still continuing.
Bidhan Tripura said a local and international quarter might have assembled the arms and ammunition in a bid to carry out subversive activities in large dimension in the country. “They might have dumped those into the lake following the combing operation,” he said, adding that they had been successful to thwart a major sabotage.
The police official also said the drive to recover more arms and ammo will continue for the whole night. “Even, we’ll continue the drive for Monday if necessary.”
