Dhaka, March 21 – A Dhaka court on Thursday disallowed German physician Gabriel Peterson from testifying in the Dr Humayun Azad murder case.
The Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions’ Judge of Dhaka, Maksuda Pervin rejected the plea of accused Mizanur Rahman. His lawyer Mohammad Nur Sikder appealed to the court to allow Gabriel to testify in the murder case.
His lawyer Nur Sikder told the court, Humayun Azad died in Germany and Gabriel did his autopsy there (in Germany). He is an important witness in the case, the lawyer added.
Fr this valid reason he should be allowed to testify in the interest of justice, the lawyer further said.
Later, the court fixed April 24 for self-defence statement of the accused.
On February 27, 2004, Humayun Azad and his wife Banya were hacked while they were returning from the book fair of Bangla Academy. Humayun Azad was severely in the attack.
After the injury, Humayun was under treatment in the CMH, Dhaka and Bangkok for 22 and 48 days respectively.
Later, in August of 2004, he went to Germany for his research work, and on August 12 of the same year, his body was recovered from his Munich flat. – Correspondent
