I want peace, not prime-ministership, Hasina tells Khatibs

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed concern over the violence during the Opposition shutdown in the past two weeks.
“Believe me I feel so much pain when I see people are being burnt in such a way. I don’t need the prime ministership,” she said while addressing the national conference of khatibs and trained Imams at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Sunday.
“I want peace for people. I cannot tolerate their sufferings,” she further said.
Many people have died in violence specially in incidents of arson during the Opposition shutdown to press for a non-party government to supervise polls.
A boy named Monir Hossain was the latest victim who succumbed to his burn injuries last week.
Hasina said during the phone conversation the Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia did neither reject her dialogue initiation nor attend the talks.
The Prime Minister alleged BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami became desperate to thwart the trial of the war criminals.
Hasina sought cooperation from Alem Oalma (clerics) to elect Awami League again for the development of Islam.
“I want your cooperation so that nobody can disrespect Quran in Bangladesh.”
Many copies of Quran, the religious text of Islam, were burnt in shops in front of the national mosque Baitul Mukarram during a rally of Hifazat-e-Islam on May 5.
Hasina urged the religious leaders to raise awareness among youths about the adverse impact of drug addiction.
The Prime Minister said students passing from the Alia madrassa are getting government jobs as Alia education programme is recognised by the government.
But the Qaomi students are deprived of government jobs since there is no government recognition to their certificates, she said.
That’s why the government has taken initiative to bring the Qaomi education under government certification, but some are projecting it wrongly, Hasina said.
She said it would not be made mandatory and none will be forced to accept it.
