Reiterating that there is a need for holding the next polls under a non-party caretaker government, Dr Mohammad Yunus on Monday said he is ready to gladly speak to the government if it wants to know his views about the ongoing political crisis.
“I meet and talk to different political party leaders as they come to me. I myself didn’t go to anybody to share my opinion. So, if anyone from the government wants to hear me or want to know anything from me, I’ll gladly accept it,” he said.
Dr Yunus, the country’s lone Nobel laureate, said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with a delegation of Kalyan Party led by its chief Party chairman Maj Gen (retd) Syed Mohammad Ibrahim at Yunus Center in the capital. The microcredit pioneer came up with the remarks as reporters asked him whether he will talk to the government as he has been doing that with political parties for some days.
Dr Yunus, the former Managing Director of the Grameen Bank, once again said the next election should be held under a non-party caretaker government for avoiding possible chaos. “You’ve your own judgments, but in my consideration there’ll be a bright prospect of peace and less possibility of chaos if the election is held under a non-party caretaker government,” he said defending his earlier remark on the issue.
Dr Yunus also said he deeply feels that a long-term peace is needed in the country. Kalyan party chairman Ibrahim said they came to Yunus to extend their support to him and lodge a protest against the government’s plan to rip the Grameen Bank to shreds.
Earlier, a delegation of BNP, Krishak Sramik Janata League and Bikolpo Dhara separately called on the Nobel Prize winner. On August 22, Dr Yunus on said the next national election must be held under a non-party neutral government to make it credible, acceptable and peaceful. “There’s no scope of having a peaceful election without a non-party neutral (polls-time) government. There must be an election and that is under a non-party neutral government,” he said after a meeting with Krishak-Sramik Janata League leader Bangabir Kader Siddiqui at Yunus Centre in the capital. – UNB
