Improved management for enhancing fish production stressed

Experts at a workshop have stressed for adopting latest proven technologies with
improved management for carp poly-culture in pond and horticulture on dyke to boost
fish and vegetables production in rural areas.
The national fish production could be increased through ensuring proper exploration of
prevailing prospect in the sector to bring economic self-reliance to thousands of farmers
through alleviating poverty in rural areas, they said.
They were addressing the ‘Stakeholder Consultation/Linkage Workshop’ organised by
WorldFish under USAID funded Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia in Bangladesh
(CSISA-BD) Project at Rajaraht union parishad auditorium in Kurigram on Wednesday.
Fifty participants including government and NGO officials, fish farmers, owners of fish
nurseries and hatcheries, fertiliser traders, medicine traders, lead farmers, fishermen, fish
traders, mega feed dealers, public representatives and elite participated.
The workshop was arranged for establishing better linkage among all stakeholders
involved with the whole process of fish cultivation, trading, marketing etc to make
commercial pisciculture more profitable.
With Kurigram District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman in the chair, Rajaraht upazila
chairman Abunoor Mohammad Akhteruzzaman attended the workshop as the chief guest.
Senior Reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Mamun Islam, Rajarhat Upazila
Fisheries Officer Rafikul Islam and Rajarhat Sadar union chairman Enamul Haque
addressed as the special guests.
Rangpur Hub Manager of CSISA-BD, WorldFish Dr Md.  Nahiduzzaman delivered
keynote presentation narrating goals, objectives activities of the project and assistances
being provided to hatchery owners and fish farmers to enhance fish production.
Fish farmer Sahodeb Roy, fish medicine trader Atul Chandra Mohanta, hatchery owner
Ishahaque Ali, fish feed traders Hamidul Haque and Lebu Miah and Aquaculture
Development Officer of WorldFish Keshob Chandro Roy spoke.
The experts identified prevailing problems like inadequacy of quality broods, quality
hormone, breeding facilities, trained human resources, hatchery management knowledge
etc and suggested the way-outs for enhancing fish production.
Dr Zillur Rahman suggested for ensured supply of quality broods, inputs, improved
Germ plasm of carp and tilapia, creating breeding nucleus, capacity building on hatchery
management, database development etc for producing quality fingerlings and making
commercial fish farming more profitable.
He highly appreciated WorldFish for playing vital role in enhancing fish production
through delivering proven technologies to resolve the prevailing problems for ensuring
production of quality fish seed to enhance fish production in Bangladesh.
The chief guest cited the huge prospect for increasing fish production in Bangladesh
and suggested for coordinated efforts of all stakeholders in building a better linkage
among them to enhance commercial pisciculture adopting the latest technologies. –BSS,
