Indefinite strike at Benapole called off

An indefinite strike enforced in Benapole Land Port by six organisations linked to export-import business through the port was withdrawn on Tuesday evening.They called off the strike following a fruitful meeting with the administration.
They went on the strike on Sunday morning, demanding steps to stop extortion by the handling workers in the name of tips.
The six organisations are: Benapole C& F Agent Association, Jessore Chamber of Commerce, Benapole Truck Owners’ Association, Benapole Transport Owners’ Association, Benapole Land port Exporters and Importers Association and C&F Agents Workers’ Union.
Port sources said the organisations announced the withdrawal of the strike as the port authorities assured them in written to take steps to stop stealing of goods and extortion by the handling workers at the port.
Local MP Sheikh Afil Uddin, Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahurul Alam, and the leaders of the six striking organisations attended the meeting held with deputy commissioner Mostafizur Rahman in the chair.
Export-import and other activities through the land port remained suspended till Tuesday due to the strike.
The organisations announced the strike after a joint meeting of the six organisations at C&F Agent Association auditorium on Saturday.
Earlier, they gave ultimatums to the Benapole Port Authorities several times to take action for stopping extortion by the handling workers. They alleged that the handling workers forcefully collect Tk 2,000-3,000 from every truck in the name of tips while loading and unloading goods. UNB
