India will fulfill all promises: Pranab

Visiting Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has assured President Zillur Rahman that India will fulfill all promises made to Bangladesh to settle the unresolved bilateral issues.Pranab called on Zillur at his official residence Bangabhaban in the capital on the second day of his visit to Bangladesh Monday. Their half-an-hour meeting ended around 7.30pm.
Bangababhaban officials briefed the media after the meeting.
Zillur thanked Pranab for choosing Bangladesh for his first visit as the President of India.
Zillur expressed gratitude to India for its support to Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War, the officials said.
Besides, he urged India to take initiatives to settle the two country’s unresolved issues like Teesta water-sharing, implementation of the land boundary agreement of 1974 and halt to killings along the border.
In reply, the first Bengali Indian President assured his Bangladesh counterpart that the issues would be resolved soon.
Pranab also said India would increase its investments in Bangladesh.
Zillur handed over Pranab the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award at the dinner party hosted in his honour for his contribution to the cause of the country during the war of independence in 1971.
They quoted Zillur as saying, “Indian President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Bangladesh has given a new dimension to the relations between the two countries. The areas of cooperation between the two nations will widen with this visit.”
Pranab arrived in Dhaka with his wife Suvra Mukherjee Saturday.
Pranab hails from Birbhum district of the Indian state of West Bengal, but Mrs Mukherjee’s roots are in Bangladesh, where her relatives still live in Narail.
The Indian President is scheduled to go Narail Today. Pranab received the honorary Doctor of Law degree at the 47th convocation of Dhaka University on Monday as the convocation speaker.
