The government has directed the authorities of all educational institutions to inform the Education Ministry if any student remains absent for 10 days or more in a row without any prior notice.Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid came up with the instruction seeking details of these students while talking to reporters after a meeting with the officials of his ministry at the secretariat on Sunday.The recent incidents of militant attacks — one on a Spanish Restaurant in the capital and another on Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj district during eid jamaat — carried out by some students of several renowned educational institutions prompted the government to give the directive.
Later, the Education Ministry issued an instruction to all the educational institutions, including schools, colleges, madrashas, vocational institutions, public and private universities, of the country in this regard.According to the instruction, if any student of any school or college remains absent for 10 or more days in a row without any previous notice, the institution concerned will have to provide details of the student to respective Thana Education Officer (TEO).The TEO will send the details to the Education Ministry through the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).On the other hand, the authorities of the public and private universities of the country will send the details of their missing students to the University Grants Commission (UGC) first and then the commission will hand over the details to the Education Ministry.Nahid urged the guardians to bring their children under strong surveillance if they see any suspicious activities in the children’s daily life.He also suggested the parents to file General Diary (GD) if their children go missing and publish it as advertisement in the mass media.The minister said he will discuss with the authorities of the schools, colleges and universities in order to prevent militancy and terrorism as part of the government’s anti-militancy campaign.On July 1, 20 hostages — nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis — were killed in a barbaric terror attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in the city’s diplomatic zone Gulshan.Besides, two senior police officers — Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam — were killed as they tried to rescue the hostages.Six of the seven gunmen, most of them were the students of several reputed educational institutions, were killed and one suspected militant was arrested during the drive.In another incident, four people, including two policemen and an attacker, were killed and 12 others injured in a bomb attack followed by an exchange of gunfire after terrorists attacked a temporary police check post near Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj Sadar upazila on Eid day.Police said the slain attacker Abir Rahman was a BBA student of the capital’s North South University and son of Sirajul Islam of Debidwar upazila in Comilla.
