International Day for Disaster Reduction Thursday

Dhaka: The International Day for Disaster Reduction will be observed in the country as elsewhere across the world on Thursday. The theme of this year day is: ‘Live To Tell’.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the day’s main programme at the Osmani Auditorium in the city as the chief guest. UNB News Agency Reported.
The prime minister will also open 100 cyclone shelters and 49 flood shelters at the programme.
Disaster Management and Relief Minster Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya briefed reporters about the programmes of the day at his office on Wednesday.
Disaster Management and Relief Ministry has chalked out elaborate programmes, including discussions, distributing leaflets, publishing supplements, rallies, painting competitions, to observe the day.
Maya said the government has taken numerous steps to face natural disasters alongside raising awareness among people.
Six salvage vessels were given to Navy, Coast Guard and Rapid Action Battalion to carry out rescue operations in cyclone-hit areas, he added.
Although there is no scope of giving any warning before lightning strike, the government has been carrying out several programmes in order to raise awareness among people about thunderbolt, Maya added.
The minister also urged the people of the country6 to dial 1090 through mobile phone to get warning messages about natural disaster. Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
In his message, the President expressed the hope that Bangladesh will be able to reduce disaster with the concerted efforts of all concerned.
The Prime Minister, in her message, urged all to come forward to face any calamity as well as to make people aware about the reason of disaster and way of saving themselves from it.
