Issue of interference on smaller sovereign states raised at IPU

Dhaka – Members of smaller countries of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) yesterday raised their voices to bring some amendments of the IPU resolution adopted in Geneva on the issue of outside interference on the sovereign states.
They said the developed and powerful countries want to intervene on the internal affairs of the sovereign states under the excuse of corruption, democracy, militancy and human rights. The issue was raised at the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security to talk about on the IPU draft resolution on the role of parliament in preventing outside interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on the occasion of the 136th IPU assembly.
Colonel (Retd) Faruk Khan, also participant in the meeting, told journalists that the IPU has taken the amendments on preventing outside interference on the internal affairs of sovereign states into cognizance.
Describing about discussion, Khan said that the resolution needs to be amended because some developed and powerful countries intervene in the internal affairs of other countries under the lame excuse of corruption, democracy, militancy and human rights.
“Such interferences do not bring anything good for the country rather such intervention deteriorates the internal affairs of the states. Steps should to be taken to prevent the outside interference. The culture and tradition of the people has to be respected and solution of any crisis has to trace out through this respect,” he asserted.
Besides, Bangladesh, some other countries including Germany, Switzerland, Vietnam, Russia, India, Chad, Thailand, etc participated in the discussion and raised their voice for brining amendments of the resolution.
Faruk Khan said some developed countries also said the resolution is fine and it could be considered to be amended to uphold the sovereignty of respective countries.
He said while seeking opinions of the repertoires like Russian federation Cyprus along with some other countries said that their drafted resolution is not bad but some amendments are might be required. – Staff Reporter
